As an accomplished pianist and member of the Cleveland High School Choir Program, Nora Burkhartsmeier, graduate of 2019, made the decision to spearhead efforts to replace the aging and failing pianos that live in our music department practice rooms and classrooms. She worked hard to assess our needs and to establish goals with the help of Kathy Walke from Classic Pianos in the 2018/19 school year, determining that only two of our 13 pianos were worth restoring. Most of our pianos are over 70 years old, broken, and beyond repair. Students at Cleveland use these pianos every day to practice, but find that they can't play full scales because of broken keys, pedals are missing or broken, and have tuning issues that aren't able to be fixed. Nora and the music department believe that investing in quality instruments that function properly provide CHS Musicians with the best opportunities to reach their full potential and show them they are valued in our school community. Assessments:
Need 7 new practice pianos for the Choir/Band teaching classrooms and practice rooms (1 PURCHASED!)
2 pianos we own were determined to be in a good enough condition to be refurbished (COMPLETED!)
Replace the auditorium piano
What we have accomplished so far:
Our 2 salvageable pianos have been restored - Thanks to a generous CHS Alumni Association donation!!
We have acquired one full piano donation! - again, thanks to our CHS Alumni Association!
We have brought in over $2700 in individual donations
Nora's efforts have been taken over by two senior choir members Maggie Carr and Hannah Crenshaw! They will continue her work to complete our goal by the end of this school year!
